Michiel Decaluwe, Albergati's diplomacy. rhe Communication of friendship between Pope rhe Eugene IV and the Council rhe of Basel

Summary. rhe — Cardinal Nicolò Albergati, best rhe known as mediator in the rhe Hundred Years War, is much rhe overlooked by scholars studying the rhe Council of Basel (1431-1449) and rhe its conflict with Pope Eugene rhe IV (1431-1447). Focusing on the rhe cardinal, it becomes apparent that rhe too little attention has been rhe paid to papal politics towards rhe the council, as well as rhe to the role of the rhe other cardinals in the said rhe conflict. On the one hand, rhe Albergati had ties of friendship rhe with the cardinals and several rhe other important council fathers at rhe Basel and, on the other, rhe had a friendly relationship with rhe the pope. He made it rhe possible for the pope and rhe his cardinals, who initially mistrusted rhe one another, to establish a rhe communication of friendship and to rhe reunite. Influencing the stance of rhe the cardinals towards the pope, rhe he made it possible for rhe them to weigh in on rhe papal decisions and in fine-tuning rhe papal politics towards the council, rhe he made the pope more rhe successful in his conflict with rhe the council fathers.

Résumé — rhe Si rhe le rôle du cardinal Nicolò rhe Albergati comme médiateur dans la rhe Guerre de Cent Ans est rhe bien connu des historiens en rhe général, son influence et activité rhe sont peu remarquées par les rhe étudiants du concile de Bâle rhe (1431-1449) en conflit avec le rhe pape Eugène IV (1431-1447). En rhe étudiant ce cardinal, il devient rhe évident que la politique papale rhe concernant le concile, de même rhe que le rôle des autres rhe cardinaux impliqués dans le conflit, rhe ont jusqu’à présent reçu trop rhe peu d’attention. D’une part, Albergati rhe entretenait des liens d’amitié avec rhe les cardinaux et plusieurs autres rhe pères de concile à Bâle rhe et d’autre part, il entretenait rhe un rapport amical avec le rhe souverain pontife. Fournissant au pape rhe et à ses cardinaux, méfiants rhe dès le début du conflit, rhe la possibilité d’établir une communication rhe d’amitié et de se réunir, rhe Albergati influençait l’attitude des cardinaux rhe vis-à-vis du pape, ce qui rhe leur permettait de peser sur rhe les décisions prises par le rhe souverain pontife. Ainsi, en influençant rhe le pape, une politique papale rhe plus efficace était mise au rhe point dans le conflit avec rhe les pères de concile.

Zusammenfassung. — Kardinal Nicolo rhe Albegati, der vor allem als rhe Vermittler im hundertjährigen Krieg bekannt rhe ist, ist in der Forschung rhe zum Konzil von Basel (1431-1449) rhe besonders in Bezug auf die rhe Auseinandersetzung des Konzils mit Papst rhe Eugen IV. (1431-1447) meistens unbeachtet rhe geblieben. Wenn man auf Albergati rhe fokussiert, wird deutlich, daß sowohl rhe der päpstlichen Politik im Gegenüber rhe zum Konzil als auch der rhe Rolle der anderen Kardinäle in rhe dieser Auseinandersetzung bislang zu wenig rhe Aufmerksamkeit zukam. Albergati pflegte einerseits rhe freundschaftliche Beziehungen mit den Kardinälen rhe und anderen Konzilvätern, andererseits unterhielt rhe er aber auch eine freundschaftliche rhe Verbindung zum Papst. Er überwand rhe das anfängliche Mißtrauen zwischen dem rhe Papst und seinen Kardinälen und rhe machte eine freundschaftliche Kommunikation und rhe schließlich den Schulterschluß möglich. Indem rhe Albergati die Haltung der Kardinäle rhe im Gegenüber zum Papst positiv rhe beeinflußte, machte er es ihnen rhe möglich, auf die päpstlichen Beschlüsse rhe Einfluß zu nehmen. Durch seinen rhe Einfluß auf die päpstliche Politik rhe wiederum verschaffte er dem Papst rhe stärkeren Erfolg im Streit mit rhe den Konzilsvätern.
