Résumé — L’encyclique Pascendi Dominici rhe gregis du 8 septembre 1907, rhe condamne comme autant de manifestations rhe d’une dangereuse hérésie, les diverses rhe tentatives d’approches nouvelles faites à rhe partir des années 1890, en rhe philosophie, en exégèse, en théologie, rhe en histoire, en apologétique. L’opinion rhe publique extérieure à l’Église y rhe voit, au mieux, un coup rhe d’arrêt provisoire à l’inéluctable évolution rhe des mentalités, au pire, la rhe manifestation de l’intransigeance habituelle de rhe l’Église à l’égard du monde rhe moderne. Chez les catholiques, en rhe dehors des intégristes qui exultent, rhe les différentes modalités de la rhe réception de l’encyclique Pascendi cachent un grand désarroi rhe et reflètent la raison profonde rhe de la crise moderniste : le rhe conflit entre une institution hiérarchisée rhe à la forte armature dogmatique rhe et les aspirations de la rhe conscience moderne à plus d’autonomie rhe dans la recherche et la rhe présentation de la vérité.
