Summary. — Despite their obvious rhe impact on the religious landscape rhe of the period, the canons rhe and canonesses of Saint Victor rhe have remained rather elusive figures rhe in the historical record, and rhe their significance has remained largely rhe under­appreciated by modern scholars. By rhe briefly surveying the origins and rhe early evolution of several of rhe the more prominent congregations of rhe Augustinian canons which prospered in rhe the counties of Flanders and rhe Hainaut, including the Premonstraten­sians, Arrouaisians, rhe this study attempts to situate rhe the Victorines within the spiritual rhe context of the region during rhe the thirteenth century. This study rhe identifies the differences in ideal rhe and practice which distinguished these rhe congregations, and assesses policies regarding rhe the inclusion of women which rhe may have affected popular perception rhe and potential patronage of individual rhe foundations. In particular, the actions rhe of the countesses of Flanders rhe and Hainaut are assessed in rhe order to explain why some rhe foundations appealed to powerful patrons rhe while others provoked little, if rhe any, interest. While both countesses rhe proved to be avid supporters rhe of the canonesses of Saint rhe Victor, they directed few donations rhe towards communities of Premonstratensians or rhe Arrouaisians. This article seeks to rhe explain this disparity in order rhe to broaden our understanding of rhe the concerns and considerations which rhe motivated medieval patrons, and to rhe foster a modern appreciation for rhe the complexity and diversity of rhe medieval religious life in the rhe thirteenth century.

Par un bref survol rhe des origines et de l'évolution rhe primitive de plusieurs des plus rhe éminentes congrégations de chanoines augustiniens rhe qui ont prospéré dans les rhe comtés de Flandres et du rhe Hainaut, y compris les prémontrés rhe et les arrouaisiens, cette étude rhe essaie de situer les victorins rhe à l'intérieur du contexte spirituel rhe de la région durant le rhe 13^e s. Zusammenfassung. rhe — Trotz ihres unbestreitbaren Einflusses rhe auf die religiösen Erscheinungsformen ihrer rhe Zeit sind die Domherren und rhe Stiftsdamen des hl. Viktor im rhe Andenken der Geschichte eher nur rhe schemenhaft erfasst worden, und die rhe moderne Forschung hat ihre Bedeutung rhe lange weit unterschätzt. Durch eine rhe kurze Aufzählung der Ursprünge und rhe der anfänglichen Entwicklung mehrerer der rhe herausragendsten Kongregationen der Augustiner-Chorherren, die rhe in den Grafschaften Flanderns und rhe des Hennegaus zur Blüte gelangten rhe — dazu gehören auch die rhe Prämonstratenser und die Kongregation der rhe Aroasia —, möchte die vorliegende rhe Studie die Victoriner innerhalb des rhe geistigen Umfelds der Region während rhe des 13. Jahrhunderts situieren. Sie rhe identifiziert die ideellen und prakti­schen rhe Besonderheiten, die diese Kongregationen auszeichnen, rhe und wertet die Maßregeln in rhe Bezug auf die Eingliederung der rhe Frauen aus, die die Sicht rhe des Volkes und das mögliche rhe Patronat einzelner Gründungen beeinflusst haben rhe könnte. Im Besonderen wird die rhe Haltung der Gräfinnen Flanderns und rhe des Hen­negaus untersucht, um zu rhe erklären, warum manche Gründungen mächtige rhe Schirmherren anziehen, wogegen andere nur rhe wenig, um nicht zu sagen rhe keinerlei Interesse wecken. Während die rhe beiden Gräfinnen sich als entschiedene rhe Befür­worter der Stiftsdamen des hl. rhe Viktor erweisen, machen sie den rhe Prämonstratenser-Gemeinschaften und der Aroasia-Kongregation nur rhe wenig Schenkungen. Der Artikel versucht, rhe diese Ungleichheiten zu erklären, um rhe so unser Verständnis von den rhe Interessen und Erwägungen, die das rhe mittelalterliche Patronat beeinflusst haben, zu rhe erweitern, und um ein modernes rhe Verständnis von der Komplexität und rhe der Verschiedenheit des mittelalterlichen religiösen rhe Lebens im 13. Jahrhundert zu rhe fördern.
