Maureen C. Miller, The rhe Florentine Bishop's Ritual Entry and rhe the Origins of the Medieval rhe Episcopal Adventus

Summary. rhe — Using the rhe evidence of the Florentine ritual rhe of episcopal entry, the author rhe argues that the complex rites rhe of episcopal adventus found in rhe many European cities in the rhe high and late Middle Ages rhe were not direct descendants of rhe late antique and early medieval rhe rituals of adventus.  rhe Limited to the bishop’s initial rhe entrance into his see and rhe highly scripted, these later medieval rhe ceremonies were local adaptations of rhe papal rituals developed in the rhe late twelfth century.  rhe As such, they are an rhe interesting gauge of the spread rhe of Roman liturgical and ceremonial rhe customs, a trend fostered during rhe the Gregorian reform.  rhe The development of these rituals, rhe however, suggests not “conformity” to rhe Roman practice, but inspiration by rhe papal models and a great rhe deal of local creativity.  The indigenous additions and rhe modifications to Roman custom often rhe reasserted the validity of local rhe traditions and ritually forced the rhe new bishop to acknowledge them.

Diese spätmittelalterlichen Zeremonien, rhe die den bloßen Einzug des rhe Bischofs bis zu seinem Sitz rhe auf das Genaueste beschreiben, waren rhe in Wirklichkeit örtliche Bearbeitungen von rhe päpstlichen, am Ende des 12. rhe Jahrhunderts verfassten Ritualen. Als solche rhe bilden sie einen interessanten Test rhe für die Verbreitung liturgischer und rhe zeremonieller Traditionen aus Rom.
